Johnnie Walton threw two late touchdown passes Sunday, then engineered a drive that produced Tim Mazzetti's 41-yard field goal in the closing seconds that lifted the New Orleans Breakers to a 27-24 United States Football League victory over the Pittsburgh Maulers.

The win kept New Orleans, 6-1, unbeaten at home and in a first-place tie with Birmingham in the USFL South. Pittsburgh, which came within a hair of an upset, slipped to 2-5.

Pittsburgh quarterback Glenn Carano, enjoying his best day as a pro, had New Orleans in a 24-17 hole with just 2:46 in the game. But Walton, passing for 48 yards on the drive, then marched New Orleans 80 yards in 57 seconds, passing 24 yards to Charlie Smith for the game tying touchdown.

Then, after forcing a Pittsburgh punt, New Orleans took the ball from its own 36 to the Maulers' 24-yard line in just five plays to set up Mazzetti's game-winning score with 12 seconds on the clock.

Walton, with 18 completions in 33 attempts for 257 yards, also passed 15 yards to Marion Brown for a third-quarter touchdown.

New Orleans' other scores came on a 33-yard field goal by Mazzetti in the third quarter and on a five-yard run by Marcus Dupree for the game's first score in the opening period.

Carano threw two touchdown passes to Greg Anderson and also scored on a one-yard plunge that built the Maulers' 24-17 edge. The Maulers also scored on a 32-yard field goal by Tony Lee in the third period.

Carano was brilliant in picking apart a Breakers secondary which had three starters out with injuries. He finished with a professional best of 34 completions in 48 attempts for 388 yards, but he also was intercepted three times by New Orleans' fill-in secondary.
