Quarterback Doug Flutie scrambled for three touchdowns, the third on a game-winning 2-yard run late in the fourth quarter to rally the New Jersey Generals to a 35-24 victory over the Los Angeles Express in week 3 of the 1985 season in the United States Football League.

Flutie, in his home debut before a record crowd of 58,741, won his duel of multimillion dollar quarterbacks with Steve Young of the Express. The Heisman Trophy winner from Boston College drove the Los Angeles defense to distraction with nine rushes for 97 yards, also scoring on runs of 11 and 8 yards as the Generals raised their record to 2-1, while Los Angeles fell to 0-3.

Flutie, who signed this winter for $7 million, also hit seven of 19 passes for 100 yards.

Trailing 24-14 entering the fourth quarter, Flutie took the Generals on scoring drives of 70 and 78 yards, capping the first with the 11-yard run up the middle and circling right end for the game winner. Kerry Justin iced the game, intercepting a pass from Young and returning it 42 yards for a touchdown with 2:12 left.
